That’s just one place that Smith visited, in an effort to offer readers a wide-reaching look at how slavery sits within our collective story, in places that history books don’t always mention. The city of New Orleans had a big hand in slaveowners’ acquisition, and when Smith traveled there, he found that the city is working on a reckoning with its past. Of course, that never stopped the import of human beings, but it did change the way that slaves were acquired. When the subject of slavery comes up, it’s often rarely mentioned that transatlantic slavery was outlawed nearly six decades before the end of the Civil War. Locus, for instance, referred to "the joy of reading a work of SF so intelligent, humane, involving, utterly genuine.magnificent," and went on to say, "It is Kress's brilliant achievement in Beggars and Choosers, that scientific progress and human idealism, the driving forces behind some of the best hard SF.,never leave behind the passionate muddle that is life." Both received widespread praise and unusual enthusiasm. Developed out of her Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novella, "Beggars in Spain," the trilogy was launched with Beggars in Spain (1993), also a Nebula nominee for best novel, and continued in Beggars and Choosers (1995). But it is with the Beggars trilogy that she has reached the pinnacle of her success. Nancy Kress, one of the leading writers of science fiction today, has written a number of provocative and award-winning stories and novels. Roger Devlin offers a non-traditional defense of traditional sexual morals and institutions and shows us the way out of today's sexual dystopia. The most controversial aspect of Devlin's work is his argument that today's sexual dystopia is rooted just as much in women's nature as men's, exploring such taboo topics as female hypergamy (mating up), narcissism, infidelity, deceptiveness, and masochism. Devlin, however, is very critical of mainstream conservative responses to the sexual revolution, which often eerily echo feminist complaints about innocent women being preyed upon by wicked men who must be scolded and punished. Devlin shows that the breakdown of monogamy results in promiscuity for the few, loneliness for the majority, and unhappiness for all.Įvery revolution gives rise to a reaction. Roger Devlin explores today's sexual dystopia, with its loose morals and confused sexual roles its soaring rates of divorce, celibacy, and childlessness and the increasingly arbitrary and punitive attempts to regulate and police it. But when utopian programs clash with dissenters-and with reality itself-the result is chaos, which revolutionaries seek to quash with repression and terror. Like many political revolutions, the sexual revolution of the 1960s began with a euphoric feeling of liberation. Screwtape holds an administrative post in the bureaucracy ("Lowerarchy") of Hell, and acts as a mentor to his nephew Wormwood, an inexperienced and incompetent tempter. In The Screwtape Letters, Lewis imagines a series of lessons in the importance of taking a deliberate role in Christian faith by portraying a typical human life, with all its temptations and failings, seen from devils' viewpoints. The uncle's mentorship pertains to the nephew's responsibility in securing the damnation of a British man known only as "the Patient." It is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it.įirst published in February 1942, the story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter.
